Clinical Discussion

Cerebellar liponeurocytoma is a very rare glioneuronal tumour of the cerebellum classified as WHO grade II that typically presents in adults. Microscopically, the tumour shows biphasic growth with (1) neurocytic areas composed of sheets of monotonous small cells with round-oval nuclei and salt and pepper chromatin; and (2) cells that resemble adipocytes but are thought to represent cytoplasmic lipidization and not true adipocytic differentiation. A glial component is sometimes seen. The neurocytic component stains for neuronal markers (e.g. synaptophysin, NSE) and the lipidized component for neuronal markers and glial markers (GFAP). Prognosis is generally favourable but recurrence is not uncommon.
