Clinical Discussion

Clear cell acanthoma is a benign cutaneous condition characterized by erythematous and brownish plaques, nodules, or papules. It is most commonly found on the lower extremities.

On histology, there is marked acanthosis with pale-staining, glycogen-containing keratinocytes, hence the name clear cell acanthoma. There can also be overlying parakeratosis and varying degrees of spongiosis and dermal edema. Neutrophils are also present in the epidermal and dermal regions.
