Clinical Discussion

Churg-Strauss syndrome is a systemic small-vessel vasculitis. It classically involves the skin (palpable purpura), gastrointestinal tract (GI bleeding), kidneys (focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis), and heart (cardiomyopathy); however, any organ system, including the peripheral nervous system, may be involved. Other clinical features associated with Churg-Strauss include asthma, allergic rhinitis, peripheral hypereosinophilia, and serology positive for MPO-ANCA (formerly P-ANCA). Histologically, small arteries, veins and capillaries show a predominantly necrotizing granulomatous vasculitis with tissue eosinophilia.
