Clinical Discussion

High‐grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSILs) of the cervix are precursors of invasive cervical cancer (squamous cell carcinoma). This case is an example of early invasion, in which the extent of invasion (measured from the closest junction of HSIL and stroma) is minimal. Invasive carcinomas less than 3 mm in depth and less than 7 mm in horizontal spread are staged as T1a1, and carry minimal risk of metastasis. The older terms “microinvasive” and “microinvasion” are to be avoided.
