Clinical Discussion

Ocular melanoma can be divided into two large categories: uveal and conjunctival melanoma. Uveal melanoma is further categorized into those arising from choroid, ciliary body or the iris. Choroidal melanoma is the most common ocular melanoma. Conjunctival melanoma is a very rare entity.

This is a case of uveal melanoma, arising in the choroid, mixed cell type. LMP97706 - shows another example of this entity (see link in related content).

Tumour staging in uveal melanoma is dependent on both the size and the extent of invasion. Despite the involvement of the ciliary bodies and extra-ocular extension, the size of the case was sufficient for its categorization as a pT4 disease. > 15 mm deep (any width) OR > 18 mm across (any depth) are the two cut-off size criteria for pT4 tumour.
