Clinical History

64-year old male, transjugular liver biopsy, history of acute liver injury for the past 2 years. Liver biopsy was performed. Trichrome stain.

Clinical Discussion

Cirrhosis is characterized by diffuse transformation of the entire liver into regenerative parenchymal nodules surrounded by fibrous bands and variable degrees of vascular shunting. It is usually better highlighted by the trichrome stain. It can be the end stage manifestation of multiple liver diseases including viral hepatitis, alcoholic or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, metabolic, immune-mediated, or drugs. In this biopsy, there was no evidence of the underlying etiology. Multiple systems are used for staging fibrosis in the liver including Batts-Ludwig, Metavir, or IASL.
