71 year old female with left parotid mass.

Clinical Discussion

Oncocytomas are benign salivary gland tumours that consist of oncocytes. They are typically encapsulated with solid, trabecular, acinar, or follicular architecture. The parotid gland is most commonly affected.

Grossly, oncocytomas are solitary, well-circumscribed and tan-brown lesions within the parotid. Oncocytes are characterized by their large polygonal shape with abundant granular eosinophilic cytoplasm and centrally located nucleoli. Clear cell change is common with intracytoplasmic glycogen. Stromal hyalinization or vascularity can be seen. It is not uncommon to see areas of oncocytic hyperplasia (multiple areas of oncocytic change within salivary gland parenchyma) adjacent to oncocytomas.
