Clinical Discussion

Immature teratomas are ovarian germ cell neoplasms consisting of immature and varying mature tissues derived from the three germ layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm).

The most common immature element is neuroepithelium (seen in this case) which can take various forms including neuroepithelial rosettes, pseudo-rosettes, and primitive tubules. The grading of immature teratomas is based on the amount of neuroepithelium present at low power.

Often, there is clinical history of mature (cystic) teratoma in the same ovary with potential corresponding symptoms of abdominal pain or mass. Immature teratoma is treated with surgical resection and/or chemotherapy, based on staging.
