Clinical Discussion

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) exhibits a varied morphology such as adenoid, keratotic, sebaceous, basosquamous, apocrine, eccrine, or fibroepithelial. This is a rather unusual variant of BCC, known as the adenoid variant. Palisading basaloid cells can be appreciated, along with some dilated spaces with mucin. Much of the lesion has essentially popped out, perhaps an extreme display of retraction artifact.

Differential diagnosis would include cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma and cutaneous apocrine carcinoma, which differ significantly with regards to their prognosis.
