Clinical Discussion

Spitz nevus is a benign tumour of melanocytes that occurs commonly in children. Sections show skin with a melanocytic lesion with symmetrical architecture and compound components. The melanocytes are mainly small cells with bland cytological features. They descend vertically deep into the reticular dermis and into adnexal structures. They show maturation features as they descend. The junctional component contains some larger melanocytes with mild atypia. The papillary dermis appears normal without fibroplasia. There are no dysplastic or anaplastic features. Eosinophilic hyaline deposits can sometimes be seen at the dermal junction ("Kamino bodies").
