Clinical Discussion

Sebaceous lesions comprise a spectrum ranging from sebaceous adenoma, sebaceoma and to sebaceous carcinoma. A key feature of sebaceous adenoma is that mature sebaceous predominate over basaloid cells, comprising at least 50% of the cells.

Significant atypia and significant number of mitotic figures should not be observed in both sebaceous adenoma and sebaceoma. Presence of these findings should raise the suspicion of sebaceous carcinoma.

In the presence of multiple sebaceous adenoma, one should raise the suspicion of Muir-Torre syndrome and immunohistochemistry for mismatch repair should be performed.
