Clinical History

Abdominal pain, jaundice, and hepatomegaly.

Clinical Discussion

Hydatid disease is a zoonosis caused by the larval stages of the parasitic tapeworm of the genus Ecchinococcus. The two most common species of Ecchinocosus that infect humans are E. granulosus and E. multilocularis.

The right lobe of the liver is the most commonly involved site; however the infectious agent may also involve the lung, kidneys, spleen, brain and muscoskeletal system.

Symptoms are varied and may include bile-duct obstruction, rupture with cholangitis, rupture into the peritoneal space and rarely, compression of the portal vein.
