Clinical History

Right forearm skin biopsy from a 31 year-old woman. The patient had multiple subcutaneous nodules.

Clinical Discussion

Steatocystoma, is a benign small cyst commonly found on limbs, chest, face, and back. They are more prevalent in females than male, and can be sporadic or display autosomal dominant inheritance.

On histology, a large, empty cyst lined by squamous epithelium with cuticular lining can be observed. Sebaceous glands can often be seen in close proximity or continuous with the cyst wall. The granular layer is often minimal or absent. Steatocystoma simplex refers to one cyst, while multiple cysts are called steatocystoma multiplex.
