Clinical History

A polyp was found in the endometrium during evaluation of a hysterectomy for fibroids.

Clinical Discussion

Endometrial polyps are common benign growths in the uterine lining. Endometrial polyps are characterized by disorganized arrangements of glandular cells and stromal cells. In this case, the benign glandular elements are present but focal only. There is abundant smooth muscle differentiation within the stromal component. The presence of prominent smooth muscle within an endometrial polyp has no known clinical significance, but allows a descriptive classification as an "adenomyomatous polyp".
