Clinical Discussion

Eosinophilic esophagitis is a clinicopathologic diagnosis usually made during evaluation for dysphagia. The criteria include clinical symptoms of esophageal dysfunction, ≥ 15 intraepithelial eosinophils per high-power field (HPF), and exclusion of other causes of eosinophilia such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

In this case the biopsy shows abundant intraepithelial eosinophils (peak count of >150/HPF), basal cell hyperplasia and intercellular edema, as well as eosinophilic micro abscesses.
