Clinical History

One-year old boy presents with cryptorchidism. Status post left orchidopexy.

Clinical Discussion

Ectopic adrenal tissue is typically observed in the abdominal cavity along the celiac axis or along the pathway of gonadal descent. When it occurs within the kidney (intrarenal ectopia), it can simulate renal cell carcinoma or an invasive adrenal neoplasm. Adrenal ectopia is found in 10% of orchiopexies and 4% of inguinal herniorrhaphies. Organs within which ectopic adrenal tissue has been observed include the lungs, liver, brain, ovary and placenta.

In this case, the boy suffered from severe germinal hypoplasia and was found to have an incidental focus of adrenal cortical tissue within the spermatic cord.
