Clinical Discussion

Inflammatory fibroid polyps are rare benign lesions that can occur anywhere in the GI tract, but are most common in the gastric antrum. They are characterized by the submucosal proliferation of highly vascular fibrous tissue with eosinophil-rich inflammatory infiltrate. Gastric and colonic lesions have prominent "onion-skin" proliferation of spindled cells around the blood vessels. Inflammatory fibroid polyps may be incidentally found, but they can present with GI hemorrhage or small intestinal intussusception. Prognosis is excellent.

Most cases are positive for CD34 and are all negative for CD117.
